Dear Secretary Haaland,

As you may be aware, Two-thirds (2/3) of the land on St. John in the US Virgin Islands is a National Park, having been given to the National Park Service (NPS) in the 1950s by Laurance Rockefeller, who retained 150 acres for himself, in a lease-type arrangement known as a retained use estate (RUE). This later became The Caneel Bay Resort. In the fall of 2017 the resort was leveled after being devastated by 2 successive hurricanes, 2 weeks apart, disrupting hundreds of lives with the loss of just as many jobs in the process.  Since that time the NPS and the current holder of the property have failed to come to a resolution and the property remains in ruins–as do the livelihoods of hundreds of former workers at the property.

I am writing to you today to express my support for the thoughtful ideas being proposed by The Caneel Purpose Group (CPG)–www.caneelpurpose.com. Under the plan, the RUE would be extinguished, and a lease put in its place that would provide revenue to the NPS, high paying jobs for the community, a sustainable 5-star eco-resort built at no cost to the NPS, taxes to the territory and profit sharing for the community of St. John (plus much more).

Time is of the essence as the livelihood of many Virgin Islanders are still not back to normal.  Jobs and career opportunities are sorely needed, an environmental mess needs to be cleaned up and the pride of St. John and the NPS needs to be rebuilt, after sitting in ruins for nearly 4 years.

Thank you for your support!
